Mollie will be reviewing portfolios again at this year’s Fotoworks NYC. We always look forward to Fotoworks, because it’s a great opportunity to meet photographers with a variety of experience and backgrounds. Keeping up to date on emerging work from both seasoned and new photographers is a wonderful way to stay current to industry trends and the always evolving art of photography.
At Edge is another event that we get excited about attending. The online portfolios and physical publications that At Edge puts together are always some of the most outstanding in the industry, so you can be sure that you’ll encounter some stellar company at their events.
What’s more is that, as a an agent and reviewer, At Edge is also a place to connect with art buyers and hear feedback from the gate keepers of the agency world.

In addition to Fotoworks, Mollie will also be reviewing portfolios at this year’s Portfolio Review program at the PhotoPlus Expo, a part of the Palm Springs Photo Festival. We had a wonderful time in Palm Springs earlier this year and are excited to participate again in New York! This year’s expo brings together some amazing talent, as well as some very passionate and leading figures in the photo community.

One Chance at a First Impression
First impressions are crucial. Great photographs are a sure fire way to show your best, while rushed images can show a company at its worst. With a beautifully rendered photograph, you can captivate your audience, portray your message, and generate trust. With a ho-hum image, in today’s lightning-fast technology driven world, it’s easy for people to click away – and just like that, you’ve lost your market & your advertising has failed.
Pictures Help Define Your Brand
If a picture is worth a thousand words, think about what you want to say. Imagery should be clear and concise. The picture should inspire your audience to want to know more.
For instance, the M&Ms candies Red, Yellow and Green star in print ads and commercials. They offer personality and different situations for each ad, but the message is always clear: they are delicious. Consumers want to know more, and they are driven to try them.
Or consider how in the Fruit of the Loom ads, the shots are simple. In them, there are models (usually attractive ones, albeit) posing in their underwear. The slogan is clear: Fruit of the Loom sells underwear. Good-looking undergarments, yes, but no matter which model or ad, what is being sold is clear. When you think Fruit of the Loom, chances are good you think underwear.
Be Memorable. Be Great.
Visual is key, as we are living in an age where we are more and more visually focused. Not everyone will be able to capture the image so it conveys every nuance. Professional photographers spend years experimenting with light, angles, compositions, and studying their craft. It is pivotal you use an expert to help you find an image that is more than good – it’s memorable. It’s great.

The Importance of Portfolio Shows
For any rep., it would be difficult to underestimate the importance of getting your photographers' portfolios in front of creative teams. After all, it is this kind of direct exposure that builds interest in your artists' work, cultivates and grows existing relationships, and, ultimately, wins jobs. But when it comes to how a rep. should go about getting portfolios seen, not all strategies are equally successful.
At Agency MJ, we've found that one of the most consistently effective means of securing portfolio reviews with high return rates has also been one of the oldest in the book: hitting the pavement and taking our work out into the neighborhood, kind of like a politician running a door-to-door campaign strategy. And when you think about, it actually makes a lot of sense. Creative teams, whether at an ad agency, marketing firm, or corporate office, are looking for more than a merely talented photographer. To put it another way, photographers landing large, commercial clients are all going to be talented and skilled in what they do. Creative teams know this, and they wouldn't express interest in hiring an artist otherwise. What they don't know, and what they can't know from a simple, impersonal portfolio viewing, is what a photographer and their rep. are like to work with in practice.
And how exactly do you give someone an idea of what it's like to work with you, when you haven't worked with them before? By meeting them in person, of course! That's why Agency MJ rep., Mollie Jannasch, recently took to the road to pay a visit to some of our favorite Dallas, TX-based advertising agencies for our 2014 portfolio show. We met with AvreaFoster, Eisenberg and Associates, The Richards Group, Slingshot, and Range! Not only did we have a great time, but we also really appreciated the opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with these agencies. Forging personal connections is what it's all about!

Palm Springs Photo Festival 2014
The Palm Springs Photo Festival 2014 was a huge success this year! This was Mollie Jannasch’s, owner and artist rep. at Agency MJ, first time attending the festival. Portfolio review events can often be grueling, but thanks to the amazing team behind PSPF, lead by director Jeff Dunas, everything seemed to go off without a hitch. We were thrilled to be involved in this event and appreciated the chance to network and catch-up with other industry professionals, from art buyers and directors, to creative consultants and photo editors, and everyone in between from agencies, editorial teams, and in-house creative offices!
As a rep, one of the most exciting aspects of photo events like the Palm Springs Photo Festival is the opportunity it provides to review portfolios from up-and-coming photographers, whose work often feels new and forward thinking. We receive and review many portfolios during the course of our work, but sorting the outstanding ones from those that feel underwhelming could – like hunting for precious stones – be a full time job in itself. It is a testament to the Palm Springs Photo Festival portfolio review program, then, that every portfolio we reviewed was well-developed and conveyed a unique sense of style and creative vision. From interiors and lifestyle, to food, entertainment, and even burlesque portraiture, the portfolios at Palm Springs Photo Festival covered a variety of specialties and industry niches. It’s a fantastic resource for reps and the like to get a feel for the pulse and ever changing tastes of this exciting industry we work in!

December 2013 marked Agency MJ's five-year anniversary. To honor this milestone, we asked Mollie Jannasch, Owner and Agent, a few questions about the history of the Agency:
When did you know you wanted to become an agent and what led to that decision?
Working at NYC Artist Agencies, Art + Commerce and Nice. These amazing experiences helped me to identify that I had an interest in the business side of the photography industry.
How many artists were on your roster when you started out?
I started with three photographers and grew the business to include East and West Coast representation within the first year.
The best thing I did starting out was consult with industry professionals who have been in the trenches longer. I reached out to Amanda Sosa Stone and Suzanne Sease, who co-wrote the book 'The Photographers Survival Guide.'
As a team, we worked on everything from setting business and marketing goals to scouting new talent. I could not have done this without their initial guidance and direction.
What's your day-to-day like?
It is a mix each week. Everything from project conference calls, scheduling and booking assignments, and marketing events and portfolio shows.
What are some of the milestones you've reached in your first five years?
Shooting with some of the best agencies and talent in the industry - from booking Chelsea Handler to Fruit of the Loom to Publix Supermarkets, I am thrilled with all the opportunities and ways in which we have developed over the past five years!
We have had so many small and large triumphs along the way, we are so grateful for our talented roster.
I also want to thank my family and friends. Their support and inspiration has helped us blossom!
