Ellen Silverman | Ball Canning Jars

You know those adorable, iconic Ball mason jars you find at every hip farmers market from Nashville to Pasadena? Our photographer / director Ellen Silverman teamed up with advertising gurus JWT to bring their latest multi-platform campaign to life.

No stranger to shooting food, Ellen’s experience with cookbooks from pop culture icons, including Gwyneth Paltrow for My Father’s Daughter, Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Back to the Kitchen, and a James Beard Award-nominated cookbook with Ana Sofía Peláez, The Cuban Table: A Celebration of Food, Flavors, and History, gave her the winning edge.

Ellen and her talented crew built a warm, rustic scene, within a clean setup, to tell the brand’s narrative in both stills and motion, “We worked with just light, our surface and background, the jar, and the ingredients,” she shares. “We had very specific cues to use to tell the story in one shot... in a very simple, yet impactful way.”

Well Ellen, you nailed it, and we’re inspired. Time for me to get out my grandma’s famous preserves recipe and get to canning.

Ellen Silverman | "The Book of Cheese" by Liz Thorpe

Food + hospitality photographer, Ellen Silverman, spent ten days in cheese heaven creating the imagery for Liz Thorpe's "The Book of Cheese: The Essential Guide to Discovering Cheeses You'll Love". Together with prop stylist Bette Blau and food stylist Eugene Jho, she photographed over 150 types of cheeses. 

Liz is known as the “countries leading expert on cheese” and has devised a simple system for understanding cheese types which she calls Gateways.  She takes basic types of cheese that we all know, for example - cheddar, brie, parmesan, etc. and shows you how to expand you choices within each category using the familiar as a jumping off point.  As a lover of cheese shooting this book satisfied my cheese cravings every day! - Ellen Silverman

Ellen Silverman | A Taste of Mexico

 

Ellen Silverman shares with us a taste of her travels to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The seafood rice stew, shrimp mango torta, floating island dessert, and other local cuisine were shot for two different cookbooks, Mexico Today by Pati Jinich and Back to the Kitchen by Freddie Prinze Jr.
